For people who don’t own central air conditioning systems, room air conditioning device can be an inexpensive, comfortable and energy efficient alternative. Three out of every four Australian households now have either a refrigerated air conditioner or an evaporative cooler, which is almost double the rate of ownership in comparison to the late 1990s.

In recent years, summers in Australia have been relatively mild, still A.C. ownership has continued to grow rapidly, with more than 4.6 million Australian households currently using at least one cooler. This increased demand has resulted in constant feature upgrades, better energy efficiency and significant price drops. Although this might sound like a consumer fairy tale, you still need to pay close attention when you are buying an air conditioning device. These are some of the most important things to consider:

Size your options

Before you leave your house, measure the size of the rooms you are planning to cool with your new air conditioning device. Each air conditioner needs 20 Btu per square foot of room space. Sydney’s air conditioning installation pros also claim that optimal Btu number depends on celling height and door and window size and position. These are some of the things you should consider when choosing an air conditioner with the appropriate power:

  • Heavily shaded rooms can be cooled with 10% less Btu;
  • Extra sunny rooms require 10% more Btu;
  • If more people regularly occupy the room, each one them requires additional 600 Btu;
  • For kitchen you will need a unit with additional 4,000 Btu;

Noise

Noisy air conditioning devices can be very distracting, especially when working on higher levels. On the other hand, air conditioning devices that scored well on noise tests are very quiet and in most cases the only thing you might hear is their fan running. For this reason, you should ask for a declaration or search for an independent review of the A.C. device you are planning to buy, in order to check its noise test score.

Window location

Window air conditioning devices do a much better job, when they are blowing cold air towards the center of the room. This can be a problem in rooms with roof windows. For these rooms you should choose air conditioning devices with swiveled fan arms. You also need to choose window air conditioners that will blow cold air in the right direction depending on your window position.

Correct installation

If you want to get the most out of your air-conditioning device you need to install it properly. Most window A.C. devices are made for double or triple glazed windows, and if you have casement windows you should choose wall air conditioners. You should also place your air conditioning device away from heat-generating appliances, like fridges or lamps.

Check filters’ location

If you want to keep your air conditioning unit in tip top condition you need to clean its filters frequently.  You also need to discharge condensation containers, because their overload can cause air conditioning device failure. That’s why you need to find air conditioning devices with easy access to filters.

Smart A.C. devices

New air conditioning units come with smart thermostats that can connect to your smartphone and enable you to check and adjust your home temperature on the go. These thermostats can also interconnect with other cooling units in your home, which improves your home’s comfort and increases its energy efficiency. If you have enough funds, you should always choose smart A.C devices.

Check device’s warranty

Always choose air conditioners with longer warranty. When you are buying a new device check its declaration. If you don’t find the warranty data there, check manufacturer’s website or ask retailer about device’s warranty and maintenance schedule.

Complex air conditioning systems aren’t suitable for small apartments and houses. Room air conditioners can produce the same effect if they are placed and used in an appropriate way. They are also much less expensive and more energy efficient, so by choosing them you save money and decrease your carbon footprint.
